Where do we start?
I began keeping chickens when I was about ten years old—over thirty years ago, around 1990. I used to carry an old wire freezer drawer basket door-to-door, selling eggs to local households. I also sold them from a table at the top of the farm lane on weekends.
That summer, my dad allowed me to take the straw from the front field. I paid a local farmer to bale it and sold the bales at the top of the lane for 50p each during the summer holidays.
Following that, my parents started North Mersea Farm Shop as a way to diversify the farm, and it ran for many years. The farm evolved over the years, and due to various commitments, I eventually gave up my chickens and eggs, but I always missed that lifestyle.

On June 5, 2013, we rebranded the shop as Mersea Farm Shop and opened it as a farm shop and animal petting center. This initiative was well-received, but I struggled with staffing and decided to close the shop just a year later. Ever since, I have regretted that decision.
Since then, the farm has continued to sell hay, straw, haylage, and other products to stables and pet stores. In 2020, following the first lockdown, a local pet and garden center that had been running for nearly 40 years closed down. The owner decided to retire, and we thought this would be an ideal time to give Mersea Farm Shop a new lease on life. We started by offering online sales with free local delivery.
This grew into opening a physical shop once a week, and eventually, we expanded to six days a week. Now, roughly a year later, we have grown to carry an extensive range of products at affordable and competitive prices, and we hope to continue progressing as time goes on.
