Escape to the Coast: Discover Mersea Island

Welcome to the UK's most easterly inhabited island—a seven-square-mile coastal escape where time moves with the tides. Located just south of Colchester, Mersea Island offers a perfect blend of tranquil beauty and vibrant maritime charm.

Whether you are here to stroll past our iconic pastel beach huts, explore the wild beauty of Cudmore Grove Country Park, or feast in our restaurants on Mersea Island and sample our world-famous Colchester Native oysters, you will find a slower pace of life waiting across the causeway.

Just remember to check the tide times before you travel—when the water rises, the Strood floods, and we happily become an island completely cut off from the rest of the world.

Take a look at the local guides below, including the best restaurants on Mersea Island
and all your essential need-to-know information.

OUR TRANSPARENCY & EDITORIAL CODE

1. THE STRICTLY MERSEA FILTER

We believe that local search should serve the local community. Every single trade, shop, eatery, and service featured across Eat Shop Play Mersea is manually vetted and verified by us. We enforce a strict geographic rule: we only list independent businesses physically based right here on Mersea Island. We actively reject mainland filler, automated data scraping, and corporate agency listings to ensure our guides remain 100% authentic to island life.

2. COMMERCIAL TRANSPARENCY

Our platform operates on a clear, community-first model. Basic business listings are completely free of charge to ensure our guides remain a comprehensive resource for residents. To support the running and technical costs of the platform, local businesses can choose to upgrade to a premium slot for a fixed, transparent fee starting at just £5, allowing them to feature live, direct telephone and email links to their own websites and social media channels. We do not accept hidden commissions or performance-based kickbacks from bookings.

3. INDEPENDENT CURATION

While we work hand-in-hand with our paid Native Anchors and local shipmates to amplify their voices, our editorial selections, event highlights, and weekly Weekender recommendations are entirely independent. A business cannot pay to alter our community updates or force low-quality services onto the feed. If an event or spotlight is featured, it is because it offers genuine value, entertainment, or commercial utility to the people who live and work on Mersea Island.
