The Mersea Tide: Services

"Despite the ongoing march of development Mersea manages to retain some of its former island magic. At full moon and new moon the sea water slowly creeps over the mud onto the Strood causeway and Mersea becomes, for a while, truly an island, cut off from the mainland. When the tide covers the Strood we do not recommend you attempt to cross, as this could be dangerous for you and damage your vehicle and other peoples vehicles."

— West Mersea Town Council

High Tide Cutoff Heights

If the tide height is 5.00 metres and above, it will more than likely cover the Strood. In this case, we highly recommend allowing up to an hour and a half either side of the peak high tide time to get on or off the island safely. So, make sure you know your Mersea Island tide times. You can get these directly at the Mersea Island Strood Cam, or there are plenty of printed local tide tables available in local businesses to pick up around the island. You can also view the Strood causeway road conditions in real time on StroodCam.

BASIC RULES TO REMEMBER

1. Your car is not a boat and it won't float.

2. You will put yourself and others in danger if you attempt to drive through the sea water.

3. Salt water is highly corrosive and is not good for your car's electrics.

4. Everyone can see you on StroodCam if you get stranded.

5. You will not be popular (please refer to point 4)

OUR TRANSPARENCY & EDITORIAL CODE

1. THE STRICTLY MERSEA FILTER

We believe that local search should serve the local community. Every single trade, shop, eatery, and service featured across Eat Shop Play Mersea is manually vetted and verified by us. We enforce a strict geographic rule: we only list independent businesses physically based right here on Mersea Island. We actively reject mainland filler, automated data scraping, and corporate agency listings to ensure our guides remain 100% authentic to island life.

2. COMMERCIAL TRANSPARENCY

Our platform operates on a clear, community-first model. Basic business listings are completely free of charge to ensure our guides remain a comprehensive resource for residents. To support the running and technical costs of the platform, local businesses can choose to upgrade to a premium slot for a fixed, transparent fee starting at just £5, allowing them to feature live, direct telephone and email links to their own websites and social media channels. We do not accept hidden commissions or performance-based kickbacks from bookings.

3. INDEPENDENT CURATION

While we work hand-in-hand with our paid Native Anchors and local shipmates to amplify their voices, our editorial selections, event highlights, and weekly Weekender recommendations are entirely independent. A business cannot pay to alter our community updates or force low-quality services onto the feed. If an event or spotlight is featured, it is because it offers genuine value, entertainment, or commercial utility to the people who live and work on Mersea Island.
