About Mersea
Need to Know Info
Mersea Island is an island in Essex, England. Its name comes from the Old English word meresig, meaning "island of the pool".
Mersea Island is special - situated between the estuaries of the Blackwater and Colne rivers, about nine miles south of Colchester - just five miles long and two miles wide - it is the most easterly inhabited island in the UK.

Used as a holiday destination since roman times. - people travel from all over to visit - and they always come back. On West is the bustling town with pubs, shops, cafes - fishing and sailing boats, the jetty and the sandy, stone beaches with the picturesque beach huts.
Head east and you will discover the rural, scenic side of the island and the beautiful Cudmore Grove Country Park - you may even uncover some fossils.
At full moon and new moon the sea water slowly creeps over the mud onto the Strood causeway and Mersea becomes an island if only for a little while.
