Why an Autumn Staycation on Mersea Island is the Ultimate Sweet Spot

Updated: 4 days ago

There is a quiet magic that settles over Mersea Island the exact moment the August bank holiday ends and the autumn months arrive.

If you ask the locals, many will tell you that from September onwards is their absolute favourite time of year. The frantic summer peak has cleared, leaving the island feeling beautifully spacious—but far from dead. The water stays at its warmest, the light turns to pure gold, and the entire island breathes a collective, peaceful sigh as the season shifts.

If you are planning a late-season getaway, here is why autumn staycation on Mersea Island is the ultimate sweet spot.

The Best Autumn Walks on Mersea Island

Autumn is the ultimate walking season on Mersea. The air is crisp, the light is stunning, and you can truly appreciate the island's natural landscape. Two coastal paths are absolute must-visits as the months roll on:

  • The East Mersea Coastline & Cudmore Grove Country Park:

Spend an afternoon exploring Cudmore Grove Country Park. Stroll along the low clay foreshore where historic fossils have been discovered, and follow the sea wall path to look out over where the estuaries meet. It is pure, spacious peace for a nature walk in Essex.

  • The West Mersea Beach Walk to Shingle Point:

Head down past the famous Monkey Steps in West Mersea. Walking along the sand and shingle beach from Monkey Beach all the way out to Shingle Point gives you unbeatable views of the local fishing fleet bobbing on the tide. As we get later into the autumn months, keep an eye out for the spectacular sight of the first Brent Geese arriving back on our waters from Siberia—it is an incredible local wildlife experience to watch.

  • You can also take a look and get your walking boots on at suggested walks on our Let's Walk guide.

Beautiful Places to Eat (Without the Queue!)

As the season winds down, the pace slows right down too.
